Stop to smell the roses…

Sometimes, in the hustle bustle of life- we can forget to acknowledge the little things in life which make life worth living. In my own life, I find this to be something I am noticing more and more each day, as my son gets older. As a teenaged boy, he does not seem to want to “hang out” with mom quite so much anymore. I fondly remember the days when we would just sit and snuggle on the couch watching cartoons, or when he would hang on my every word with eyes wide open taking it all in. Now, I am lucky sometimes to have a quick hug on his way out the door. I guess it is this time in his life most, that I realize that times are changing fast, and before I know it- he will be away at college. I cherish even small little flashes in time, unlike ever before. I had a great conversation with him the other night- as he described everything that happened to him at tryouts for the 8th grade basketball team. I could not help but think how wonderful it was, at that very moment, how with such excitement that he described to me what would be a memory he would probably cherish most in life… the moment he first “made the team”! No, getting on because he paid a fee, no automatic registrations, no trophy just for playing. At this moment, my son realized, probably for the first time in his life- that he EARNED something. He gave it his best, and it was good. This is how I choose to see each new day now, with intent… to give it my best, and see just what can be done when you do. What have you done like that today? I dare you to try to do something different… even if for one day, go out on a limb, try something new…. you just may do something spectacular- if not for you, for someone else. Today is your day, make it a sunny one!
